Upon his release from prison for a self-defense killing, Sailor Ripley(Nicolas Cage) is reunited with his girlfriend Lula Fortune(Laura Dern). Lulu’s crazed mother Marietta(Diane Ladd), in a bid to keep them apart, hires a hit man to kill Sailor. Lulu and Sailor head out on a sex fueled road trip, and happen upon the seedy Bobby Peru(Willem Dafoe), an old buddy of Sailor’s. Peru is a menacing figure, and neither of our two lovers are safe around him. Marietta’s specter is also always looming.
